Mapping Report Model Entities to Drill-through Reports

When you use Sql Mgmt Studio to assign a report as a drill-through target for
a model entity, you can assign reports for both "Single Instance" and
"Multiple Instance". Does anyone know what this means? I had a 2+-hour
support session with a member of MS SQL Reporting team, and he didn't know
either.

RB,
If you have opened RB through some other server then you can attach where it
is for multiple instance of the servers. Basically to update on the report
server database of multiple servers is called multiple instance and single
server is called single instance.

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345298.aspx
(Lesson 12: Specifying Clickthrough Report Options from BOL):
"There are two clickthrough templates for each entity: a single instance
template and a multi-instance template. A single instance template is used
when the user clicks an instance of the entity. A multi-instance template is
used when the user clicks an aggregate value and multiple instances of the
entity are displayed."
I am sure that I am not the only person who fervently wishes that the
reference sectins of the documentation contained such information.
Cheers,
Helen

Many questions about internationalization options

In RS 2000, I have a version of a set of reports (50+) that are in English and formatted for US letter size. I need to have all of these also in French in A4.
What is the best way to do this? Can I use resource files? If so, for the formatting size as well as the language? How would I do that?
If I can't use resource files, are there any other ideas than a set of separate rdl files?
Is this any different in RS 2005?

Hi Patty,

I am interested to seeing some feedback from the microsoft guys themselves on this (multilingual reports).

I have spent the past days on and of looking for some good references on this. You could even drop the good because there is nothing to find on this!

Here's Microsoft's answer to internationalization:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/RSCREATE/htm/rcr_creating_building_v1_31bn.asp

There is a way to use expression to be able to internationalize labels within a report. With each meta data element within your report you specify a switch statement where you translate the label into the respective language. Via a report parameter you pass in the language of choice which is then translated at runtime.

E.g.

Label Expression (right-click on label within report):

=Switch

(

Parameters!Language.Value = "E", "English Label",

Parameters!Language.Value = "D", "Deutscher Label"

...

)

Manually kick off a subscription

Using Report Manger, is it possible to manually kick off a subscription?
For example, if I have 100 scheduled reports and for some reason they do not
go, or need to be resent (for example, in my case a replication error) can
those reports be manually kicked off? I certainly don't want to rerun each
report and manually email all of these reports.
ThanksNo, through report manager you cannot manually kick off a subscription. The
workaround isn't pretty:
You can use entreprise manager to kick off a particular schedule. The only
thing you need is to get the schedule ID that the subscription is tied to.
One problem with this approach is that you'll kick off everything that is
attached to the schedule.
If you're using a shared schedule. You can find out the schedule ID by
calling the GetSubscriptionProperties method. It will come back in the
match data.
If you're using a subscription specific schedule, the easiest way is to
resave the subscription. This will create a new job in SQL Agent. So if
there aren't other users creating schedules at the same time, you'll be able
to look at the list of jobs at the same time, you'll see an entry in the
list of jobs which has never executed. Odds are this is the schedule you're
looking for.

It looks like it's a better idea to use Shared Schedules for what I'm doing.
If I need to rerun the whole schedule, then I just modify the execution time
and change it back after it completes.
However, what if I have 100 reports and 50 need to be re-ran? Looks like
there is not a way to do this. Is that right? If not, it might be a good
idea to look at this for future releases. Allow us to choose individual
reports in a Shared Schedule and reprocess them.
Thanks

have over 300 scheduled reports. It is very likely that I will have to
re-run reports for one reason or another. I was hoping that I would be able
to use Report Manager without having to write something myself. Hopefully
this feature will be discussed for future releases.
Thanks again.

The way to make this work is to create a shared schedule that never fires
(occurs once where that occurance is in the past). Then hook up your
subscription to this schedule.
The shared schedule will match a job in SQL Agent.
To run a report on demand, use the SQL Agent APIs to trigger the job.
I know, this solution sucks...

Manually Creating and Resetting Running Total in CR 8.5

Hi could anyone pls help me in manually creating and resetting running totals in Crystal Reports 8.5

Problem :

I have a table in foxpro which stores purchase or sales,product name,qty,rate. I need to calculate the cost price of balance qty in hand. say for example :

PU/SL--Name--Qty--Rate

Purchase--prodA--10---100
Sale---prodA--5---150
Sale---prodA-- 5---130
Purchase--prodA--25---90

and so on
desired output

PU/SL--Name--Qty--Rate--Amount--Bal Qty--Bal Rate

Purchase--prodA--10---100---1000---10----100
Sale---prodA--5---150---750----5----50
Sale---prodA--5---130---650----0----0
Purchase--prodA--25---90---2250---25----90

It is something similar to avg priceing that people generally use it for stock after making several transactions for same script to know what price does each stock cost.

Hence after the qty becomes 0 and new purchase made the purchase price should be the cost price and the profit made shouldnt reduce the cost price.

I have tried explaining the best possible way yet if you have any other query pls feel free to contact me on isicles@.hotmail.com

PLS HELPYou have to use Formulas in calculating running totals. See you help documentation regarding running totals you will get help.

Also see functions like
BeforeReadingRecords, WhileReadingRecords, WhilePrintingRecords & Evaluate(X). You will need these extensively for calculating running totals.

Revert if you need more help

Regards
Amarjit|||Thank You Sir,

Running totals are created using formula. But i wanna know how can i reset these totals on 2 conditions.

1) The running total value goes to 0 and
2) On change of Group

Thanks|||Why dont you use If then Else in the formula before running totals.

Example report using evaluation time function

This example report illustrates the use of an evaluation time function to take a formula that would normally be evaluated while reading records and force it instead to be evaluated while printing records.

Scenario

You want to create an order detail report that:

shows the extended price for each line item,

calculates a running total for each line, and

resets itself to 0 for each new order.

Unless you disabled the Samples and Examples option during installation, the report, called EVALTIME.RPT, is one of the sample reports that was installed on your system. An example showing partial data from that report follows:

Order# Item# Qty Price Extension RunTotal
Order #2203

2203 1002 3 276.00 828.00 828.00
2203 1102 1 1,230.00 1,230.00 2,058.00
Total for order 2203 2,058.00
Order # 2204

2204 1001 7 192.00 1,344.00 1,344.00
2204 1002 3 276.00 828.00 2,172.00
2204 1003 1 484.00 484.00 2,656.00
2204 1102 3 1,230.00 3,690.00 6,346.00
Total for order 2204 6,346.00

The report uses four database fields:

Order# {detail.ORDERNUM}
Item# {detail.ITEMNUM}
Qty {detail.QTY}
Price {detail.PRICE}
It uses three formulas:

@.extend {detail.QTY} * {detail.PRICE}

@.extend simply calculates the extended price for a line item (quantity ordered times price per item). This provides the values in the Extension column.

@.initialize NumberVar Runtotal;
If {detail.ORDERNUM} <> Previous ({detail.ORDERNUM}) Then
Runtotal := 0
Else
Runtotal := Runtotal

@.initialize resets the variable Runtotal each time the order number changes so the running total for each order begins at 0.

@.runningWhilePrintingRecords;
NumberVar Runtotal;
Runtotal:= Runtotal + {@.extend}

@.running calculates the running total for each order by adding the extended price for each line item to the existing running total for the order. This provides the values in the Running Total column.

And it includes one subtotal:

Sum of @.extend End group #1: detail.ORDER
Sum of @.extend

It subtotals the extended price each time the order number changes, thus providing the Total for order nnnn order total.

Evaluation Times

Formulas are normally evaluated at the following times:

If no database or group field is included in the formula, the formula is evaluated before the program reads database records.
If a database is included in the formula, the formula is evaluated while the program reads database records.
If a group field, page # field, subtotal, etc. is included in the formula, the formula is evaluated after database records are read and while the data from the records is being printed in the report.

The evaluation time problem which is solved with one of the evaluation time functions involves the relative evaluation time of two formulas, @.initialize and @.running.

@.initialize includes the Previous function which is evaluated while records are printed. Any formula that includes the Previous function, therefore, will be evaluated while the records are printing as well.
@.running, on the other hand, is normally evaluated while records are read. @.running includes the formula @.extend in its calculations, and @.extend involves a database field. Whenever a database field is involved in a formula, the formula is evaluated while reading records (unless there is something in the formula a subtotal, a page # field, etc. that causes the formula to be evaluated later).

If we leave both formulas to be evaluated at their normal times,

@.running is evaluated first (during record read time) and it outputs running totals for each line item.
Then, after it is finished calculating the running totals, @.initialize is evaluated (during record print time). This formula initializes (sets to 0) the Runtotal variable each time the order number changes.

By this time it's too late. The running totals have already been calculated without being initialized between orders. The final printed report shows running totals getting bigger with each line item; they are not reset from order to order.

Your report comes out looking like this:

NOTE: Order detail report @.running doesn't include an evaluation time function.

Order# Item# Qty Price Extension RunTotal
Order #2203

2203 1002 3 276.00 828.00 828.00
2203 1102 1 1,230.00 1,230.00 2,058.00
Total for order 2203 2,058.00

Order # 2204

2204 1001 7 192.00 1,344.00 3,402.00
2204 1002 3 276.00 828.00 4,230.00
2204 1003 1 484.00 484.00 4,714.00
2204 1102 3 1,230.00 3,690.00 8,404.00
Total for order 2204 6,346.00

To solve this problem, you must make certain that @.initialize is evaluated at the same time as @.running. You can't force a print time evaluation formula (@.initialize) to evaluate at read time (forcing it to be evaluated before the required data is available), but you can force a read time evaluation formula (@.running) to evaluate later, at print time. You do this by starting the formula (as we did) with the function WhilePrintingRecords;

WhilePrintingRecords;
NumberVar Runtotal;
Runtotal:= Runtotal + {@.extend}

When you do this, your report comes out looking like you want it, like this:

NOTE: Order detail report@.running includes evaluation time function.

Order# Item# Qty Price Extension RunTotal
Order #2203

2203 1002 3 276.00 828.00 828.00
2203 1102 1 1,230.00 1,230.00 2,058.00
Total for order 2203 2,058.00

Order # 2204

2204 1001 7 192.00 1,344.00 1,344.00
2204 1002 3 276.00 828.00 2,172.00
2204 1003 1 484.00 484.00 2,656.00
2204 1102 3 1,230.00 3,690.00 6,346.00

Manual Installation of Printing ActiveX Control

I have a issue. My users that run RS Reports do not have administrative priviledges to install the ActiveX control required to use the Print function for an RS Report. Currently, the only way they can print the report is to export the report to another format before printing.

Is there a way to manually install the ActiveX Control. I need to install the control on about 200 users, possibly through network logins scripts.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

did you ever resolve this issue? we're running into the same.

Manipulating a reports visual appearance

Hi,
we are changing at the moment our reporting system from crystal report to MS
Reporting services. Our reports are highly customizable during display. In
Crystal Reports we were using scripts into the reports to set the text align
and the column back- and foreground color by user decisions. It was also
possible to choose whether the report should be displayed in landscape or
portrait format. Now I need to give the reports with MS Reporting Services
the same abilities but I didn't find any possiblity to that yet. Because our
main application in which the reports are shown is written in good old MFC
we are using URL access to render and display the reports.
Does anyone here knows how to solve one or all of my issues described above?
Thanks in Advance
Markus
P.S. I'm a really newbie in MS Reporting Services.Style properties (like text alignment and color) can be expressions. These
expressions can depend on parameters to the report.
For example:
<TextAlign>=Parameters!TextAlign.Value</TextAlign>
Or:
<Color>=iif(Parameters!ColorScheme.Value="Rainbow","HotPink","LightBrown")</
Color>
For page orientation, you can set the page height and width via parameters
in the URL (something like rc:PageHeight=8.5... Check the documentation for
details)

Managing user-defined properties for report items

[crossposted to MS Community forums as well]
I have defined a user-defined property for several reports. The coding
for GetProperty/SetProperty is straightforward, but it looks as if
there is no management/admin capability through Report Manager or SQL
Management Studio for user-defined properties. Is this correct?
If that capability does not exist, Is there any plan for future
versions of RM/SqlMgtStudio to support getting/setting user-defined
properties?
Thanks!
Regards,
MichaelJust to follow up on this - I've submitted this as a product request to
Microsoft - they've basically postponed any action on it and said
they'll look at it for a future release. *shrug*

Management Studio Summary Page - Reports

Is there a way to add customized reports to the list of reports available via
the Summary page of SQL Server 2005 Management Studio? Or if I wanted to
modify one of the pre-existing reports, is this possible? If so, how?
No and No. This will probably be possible in a future release.
