MAPI Mail Client for SQL Mail?

Are there any free MAPI mail clients that I could use with an Internet mail
service (POP3/SMTP) so I could set up SQL Mail?
The Outlook Express that came with my dedicated server doesn't seem to do
the trick, and it's not easy to install Outlook on a dedicated server at a
hosting site where I can't just pop in a CD.
Thanks for any help.Don,
I am not sure I understand what you need to do. If this is SQL2005 you can
use Database mail to access any SMTP server. If you are on 2000 you might
want to check this out:

I do have Win2K. What I'd like to do is, when a SQL Server Agent job (e.g.
backup) runs successfully (or more importantly fails) that I get an email.
Or if a CHECKDB identifies problems?
I've seen 'xpsmtp' but it seems a little complicated, and requires extra
non-intuitive steps when setting up jobs.
I just thought there might be a downloadable MAPI mail client somewhere (not
necessarily free) that would let me use SQL Mail as if I had Outlook
installed and could use email notification with jobs as easily as I could if
I had Outlook installed.

using SMTP for job notification can involve a lot of extra work as well. If
you are willing to spend a few dollars your life could be made much easier
with a tool such as SQL Sentry from www.sqlsentry.net. It does a lot more
than just monitoring job status and can save a lot of aggravation.

Many Thanks

I have 2 xp machines one has the SQL EXPRESS Server with all the goodies on it and the other I just install the client stuff. I am using VB 6 to program with using the ADO. It works great on the server machine. The software pulls up great. I can't seem to get it to work on the client machine. I get "Login failed for user 'TIGGERL\Guest'. I found the places to set the TCPIP setings on the server SQL Express to allow this even turned on the browser but nothing same error. I am using the same login on both machines and am pointed to the same workgroup. I used window authentication when I set them up. Not sure why it insists on using Guest.

This is a copy of the connection string I am using

"Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;AttachDBFileName="c:\mpsdb\mpswarehouse.mdf;Database=MPSDB;Data Source=tiggerl\sqlexpress;Trusted_Connection=yes;"

Not sure if this is okay for connecting remote. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Rick

Hi,

Using guest normally means that you enabled the "Simple filesharing" on your computer which will not prompt the user for credentials rather than using the standard user (Guest).
Try to switch that and let see if that helps:

Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View > Enabled simple file sharing

Manually Inserting Data in DateTime Field

Using Server Explorer in VB 2005, I am manually entering data in a table in a SQL Server 2005 Express database that includes a DateTime field. I have tried every conceivable format, but no matter what I try get one of these 2 errors:

1. String was not recognized as valid DateTime

2. Operand type class; text incompatible with DateTime

I have Googled this to death, but no example which involves trying to enter the data manually, say from Server Explorer.

Formats tried include all datetime formats (mmddyy, yymmdd, using dashes or slashes, enclosing in single quotes or pound signs).

I would appreciate if someone could please give me an example that I can literally insert without error.

hi,

I tried myself inserting via the VS designer the following:

2006-09-19 (it works)
2006/09/19 (it works)
19/09/2006 (it works)
19-09-2006 (it works)

the 2 last entries are dangerous as the server could misunderstand the datetime format... my pc has the italian locale set, so it could be ok, but I do advise to use a "general" ISO format that can not bring to misunderstanding, thus YYYY-MM-DD

regards

|||

Andrea, appreciate the response, but I tried your suggestions, and some related ones (09/19/2006), and they did not work. The error was Operand type clash; text incompatible with DateTime.

Again, I am opening the SQL Server 2005 Express database, then the table, from Server Explorer, and then choosing Show Table Data from the shortcut menu, and then typing the data into the datetime column field. Any further ideas would be appreciated.

|||I am an idiot. I was typing the data into the wrong field. Your suggestions work. Sorry for wasting your time.

I want to manually install the database for the reference implementation (I have SQL 2005 Express when I installed the Factory, but AdventureWorksMobileStaging database is not installed in my sqlExpress, so i try to install manually in that database ) I have noticed a number of scripts under the AdventureWorksToGo\DBScripts folder. Hi Varisai,

You should ask this type of question in the MCSF workspace, which you can find at http://www.codeplex.com/smartclient. The order of the scripts is specific to the implementation of this Patterns and Practice SDK and not really a part of SQL Express.

Hi Varisai,

Sorry I can't be much help here. MCSF is a sample app created by the group of people who own the CodePlex site, not by the SQL Server group, you need to seek help from them as I don't know anything about the implementation they use. There is a forum on the CodePlex site where you can post your questions and hopefully the owners will answer.

Managing Scheduled Jobs from Management Studio Express

I'm working on a backup solution for my company. Right now we have three servers in three locations running SQL Server 2000. For testing purposes, I created a scheduled job on one of these servers. It worked fine but I'd like to tweak the job some, tinker with the timing and save locations. I'm using Management Studio Express on my laptop to remotely work with these databases but I can't seem to find a decent way to work with existing jobs. Am I missing something or does SSMSE lack the "manage jobs" functionality?

SSMSE only exposes functionality that is available in SQL Express. Since Express doesn't include Agent, SSMSE doesn't include the ability to manage Agent jobs.

The SQL 2005 Feature Pack includes some DTS 2000 add-in that may meet your needs. I've not worked with them, but they may work for you.

Managing Remote SQL Server from Server Express

Managing MSDE and SQL Express...

Hi all,
I'm a newbie so I won't mind if you roll your eyes as you read this...
I have sqlExpress installed on my machine and its working beautifully.
I have used SqlExpress and msde in the past for web development with
great success, but I have always had an issue managing the databases in
Visual Studio.net or VisualWebDev2k5 in as much as its cumbersome and
hard to manage not to mention slower.
Is there any sort of stand-alone interface - like SQL enterprise
manager -- to help with this?
Thanks (in advance) for the help.

managing live and develop database

Hello,

I haven written a Windows program in Visual Studio 2005. This program stores data in and retrieves data from a SQL Express database. The customer is starting to use the program and filling the database with data. However the program is still under construction (new functionality will be added) and so is the database (new tables, views etc. will be added).

Of course I could send the customer the new database, but than all data already entered will be lost.....

I'm thinking about using the SQL Management Studio Express and VS2005 to connect remotely to the database (a VPN connection is availabe) but worry about performance issues.... Or should I use some kind of replication / synchronization and how, because this is new to me.

What is the best way to solve this 'problem' ?

the best article I've read about database versioning and related issue is available at http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/04/09/customdatabaseinstaller/ ... it support both "original" installation as successive metadata updates..

The short answer is that you should use scripts to update the schema of your deployed database. The article Andrea points to is a good one that discusses ways to deploy and update databases. A new tool to help you manage you database across versions and create scripts for upgrades is Visual Studio Team Systems for Database Professionals.

|||

After doing some research on the web I found out that InstallShield 12 from Macrovision is able to script SQL 2005 databases.

I have downloaed the trial version and created a sample installer and it worked perfectly !!. You can let the end-user specifiy the server to logon, how to log on (windows authentication or SQL login) and which catalog (database) to use.

|||

After a day of testing I found out that InstallShield works fine but is rather expensive !!
So I googled some more and ran into the products of Red Gate. They have several SQL products and one of them is called SQL Packager.
You can use this software to package your database or upgrade an existing database. You can package the database as a .NET executable or as an C# project.

What is the best way to solve this 'problem' ?

Hello,

I haven written a Windows program in Visual Studio 2005. This program stores data in and retrieves data from a SQL Express database. The customer is starting to use the program and filling the database with data. However the program is still under construction (new functionality will be added) and so is the database (new tables, views etc. will be added).

the best article I've read about database versioning and related issue is available at http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/04/09/customdatabaseinstaller/ ... it support both "original" installation as successive metadata updates..

The short answer is that you should use scripts to update the schema of your deployed database. The article Andrea points to is a good one that discusses ways to deploy and update databases. A new tool to help you manage you database across versions and create scripts for upgrades is Visual Studio Team Systems for Database Professionals.

Management Studion Express alongside full-blown Management Studio?

Is it possible to run both Sql Server Management Studio: Express and full blown side by side?

I am developing with the full blown product but would like to test Management Studio Express on the same box.
Is this possible?

Thanks

Eric Hi !

For a full and realistic test, I would put them not on the same machine, as you can′t be sure in which way the big brother will interfer with the deployed assemblies. Just deploy it on a dedicated test machine to do your tests.

Well, I think I'll just do that then.

Thanks

Management Studio vs. Management Studio Express Edition

I am back doing development after a three year hiatus. Previously I was working with SQL Server 2000 and Enterprise Manager and I need to get up to speed quickly on version 2005.

The computer I am using already has Management Studio Express installed but we have full licensed copies of version 2005 enterprise edition available. I have two questions:

Are there features available in the full version of Management Studio that would compel me to switch from the Express Edition?

If so, how in the heck do I make the switch. Is it as easy as uninstalling the Express Edition and then installing the full version from the 2005 enterprise edition CD?

I already tried installing from the enterprise CD and got the error message cited in other threads about being blocked so I want to make sure I do this right.

Thanks very much for your help and I apologize for the newbie question...

Yes, there is functionality available in the full version of SSMS that is not available with the Express version.

And removing SSMSE and installing SSMS 'should' work just fine.

|||Thanks for the reply. It required a couple of tries to get rid of Management Studio Express edition because of the dependent applications it installs, but it looks like I got it out finally and was able to do the installations of the full version Management Studio from the Enterprise Edition CD. Thanks for your help!
