Mapping a sybase db on a MS SQL server
I'm looking for an ETL tool to replicate my Sybase database on a MS
SQL server. Any idea on how to proceed?
Thanks,
--Michel
Hi
Look at DTS. It is part of the SQL Server install.

Managing MS SQL on Linux
I'm looking into moving my desktop system at work to Linux from Windows
XP, and one tool I've yet to find a suitable replacement for is MS SQL
Enterprise Manager. I mainly need to query MS SQL databases from
Linux, and management tasks (monitor backups, services, etc) can be
done on the MS SQL servers themselves. THere was an application I used
to use on OSX which would connect to a variety of databases, including
MS SQL, and they had a Linux version of the client .. but can't
remember the name. But really any Sybase client that can connect to MS
SQL with some ease will work.
Thanks for any suggestions or ideas ...

Using "is" with the -m flag you can query MS SQL Server databases. is
also has a whole bunch of other useful and cool stuff:

Use RDP or any method like UltraVNC, TightVNC, etc. etc. that allows
you to log in to the SQL server itself and do your stuff...then you can
use SSMS and all its goodness...I RDP all the time to my servers. No
harm done.

Why not Oracle Database 10g Express Edition? It is completely free and,
it runs on both Windows and Linux. It is a fully functional Oracle
database engine.

If you are mainly querying SQL you can use FreeTDS which comes with a
command line query tool aka osql IIRC. Other than that there are some
free Java based tools around that can execute SQL on any DB with a JDBC
driver and some of them are even capable of displaying meta data. One
of them is http://www.sql-workbench.net/ - you may find more here:

Try Squirrel SQL http://squirrel-sql.sourceforge.net with jtds that
someone else mentioned. It's the best open source database admin tool
I've found so far.

Managing Disk Space
(database/tran log size vs. free disk space)?
Thanks.
No tricks really. You have to chose the best recovery model for your
database, and an appropriate backup plan, to keep the transaction log files
in check. Also, defragmenting your tables will help avoid disk space
wastage. Please read up on recovery model, BACKUP/RESTORE, DBCC DBREINDEX,
DBCC INDEXDEFRAG.

For Managing the growth you can use the Performance monitor. You create the
Alerts in performance monitor
which can raise an network message / write in application log based on the
threshold limit set for each counters.
You can also create your own alerts using SQL Agent from SQL Enterprise
manager.
Monitor disk space , see the belew link.

Apart from this you can use the 3rd party tool.

Management Studio, Save as... dialog before running External Tools
Hi.
In Management Studio I have defined some external tools. When I call my external tool from Tools menu and I have query scripts that are not saved I get "Save File As..." dialog for EVERY not saved script before running my External Tool. This is frustrating because sometimes I have a lot of not saved scripts and my External Tool doesn't need saved script files. How to run External tool in Mangement Studio without this frustrating "Save File As..." dialog box?
Kamil
I get the same thing. I can click cancel and the tool still opens, but it is annoying.
